How to Fix Carpet Burns (And When You Need a Professional)

Published 31 March 2026 · By Carpet Now

A dropped iron or a lit cigarette is all it takes — and suddenly there’s a burn mark in your carpet. The good news: carpet burns are one of the most common carpet repairs, and most can be fixed to the point of being invisible. Here’s what you need to know.

Types of Carpet Burns

Not all carpet burns are the same. Understanding the type determines the right fix:

Surface Burns

Just the tops of fibres are singed. The backing is undamaged. These can sometimes be trimmed with small scissors on low-pile carpet.

Deep Burns

Fibres are melted to the backing, or the backing itself is damaged. These always need professional repair — DIY attempts almost never look right.

Can You Fix a Carpet Burn Yourself?

For surface burns: carefully use small scissors to trim the singed tips of the fibres. This works on low-pile carpet and can dramatically improve the appearance. Avoid cutting too deep — trim a little at a time and check the result.

For deep burns: DIY repair attempts — using loose fibres, fabric glue, or carpet tape — almost never look right. Professional carpet repairers use donor carpet (from a spare piece or a hidden area) to patch or re-weave the damaged area invisibly. Without matching donor carpet and professional technique, DIY fixes are almost always visible.

What Does Professional Carpet Burn Repair Involve?

We assess whether the burn can be targeted (removing burned fibres and blending the area) or requires a patch (cutting out the burned section and replacing it with matching carpet). Most burn repairs are completed in under an hour. The result is typically invisible or close to it. View our carpet repair service.

What About Bond Return Burns?

If you’re in a rental property with carpet burns, you’re generally responsible for repair. A professional burn repair is almost always cheaper than the amount deducted from your bond for carpet damage. Get the repair done before the final inspection rather than leaving it to the landlord.
