How to Choose Carpet for Your Home — A Practical Guide

Published 31 March 2026 · By Carpet Now

Walking into a carpet showroom and choosing from hundreds of options is overwhelming. But the decision comes down to a few key factors: where the carpet is going, who lives in your home, and how much you want to spend. Here’s what actually matters.

Pile Type — The Biggest Decision

Pile type determines how the carpet looks, feels, and holds up over time:

  • Cut pile (fibres cut at the top): soft, comfortable, shows footprints and vacuum marks. Good for bedrooms. Includes plush, saxony, and frieze styles.
  • Loop pile (fibres looped, not cut): durable, hides footprints, better for high traffic. Includes Berber and level loop.
  • Cut and loop (combined): creates patterns and textures — a good compromise between softness and durability.

Fibre Type

The fibre determines durability, stain resistance, and price point:

  • Nylon: most durable synthetic, resists wear and staining, best all-rounder for family homes.
  • Polyester: soft, stain-resistant, good value — but less resilient than nylon under heavy traffic.
  • Wool: natural, premium feel, excellent durability and natural stain resistance — but costs significantly more.
  • Triexta (SmartStrand): newer fibre, excellent stain resistance, popular for pet owners.

What Works in Queensland

Queensland’s humidity is hard on carpet. Avoid very thick, dense pile in rooms with limited airflow — moisture retention can lead to mould. Choose fibres with good moisture resistance (nylon, polyester, triexta) for living areas. Wool performs well if the home is climate-controlled. Use a good quality moisture-resistant underlay as a baseline in any Queensland home.

Underlay — Don’t Skip This

Good underlay makes a cheap carpet feel expensive. It absorbs impact, adds insulation, reduces noise, and extends carpet life by protecting the backing. As a minimum, use 8mm thickness for living areas. Higher-density foam or rubber underlay in heavy traffic zones. If you’re replacing carpet and the existing underlay is in reasonable condition, ask the installer whether it’s worth reusing — it can save $3–$8/sqm.

Colour and Pattern

Light colours make rooms feel larger but show dirt. Mid-tones are forgiving. Dark colours hide staining but can show lint and pet hair. Patterns — Berber flecks, textured loops — hide wear and footprints better than solid plush. For households with children or pets, a mid-tone with some texture is usually the most practical long-term choice.

What to Ask the Supplier

  • What is the pile weight (grams per sqm)? Higher means more durable.
  • What is the warranty, and what does it cover?
  • Is it suitable for stairs?
  • What underlay do they recommend for this specific carpet?

Getting It Installed Right

Even the best carpet looks bad if installed poorly — with bubbles, visible seams, or loose edges. A professional installation with proper stretching and edge finishing protects your investment. An installer who rushes through the job to keep the price down will cost you more when the carpet starts to bubble and ripple within a year. View our carpet installation service.
