How Long Does Carpet Last? What Actually Determines Carpet Lifespan
Published 31 March 2026 · By Carpet Now
A carpet salesperson might tell you 15–20 years. A carpet fitter might tell you 10. The honest answer is: it depends on the carpet, the household, and how well it’s maintained. Here’s what actually determines how long your carpet will last — and what you can do to extend it.
Average Carpet Lifespan by Type
Under normal residential use in Southeast Queensland:
- Budget polyester (50–60oz pile weight): 5–7 years
- Mid-range nylon: 10–12 years
- Premium nylon or triexta: 12–15 years
- Wool: 15–20+ years if maintained well
- Commercial loop pile (Berber): 10–15 years depending on traffic
What Cuts Carpet Life Short
Most carpets fail early for one or more of these reasons:
- High foot traffic without regular vacuuming: grit embeds in fibres and acts like sandpaper on the pile
- Furniture: heavy furniture compresses pile permanently over time — use furniture coasters to distribute weight
- Queensland humidity: moisture in the backing accelerates breakdown, particularly in poorly ventilated rooms
- Delayed repairs: a small tear or loose seam that goes unrepaired spreads and causes wider damage
- Poor installation: carpet not stretched properly will bubble, ripple, and wear unevenly from day one
Signs Your Carpet Needs Replacement (Not Repair)
- Worn through to the backing over large areas
- Permanent indentations across the whole room that won't lift with steam
- Persistent odour despite cleaning — usually pet urine saturation into the subfloor
- Widespread matting that doesn't respond to vacuuming or professional cleaning
Signs Your Carpet Can Still Be Saved
Not every ageing carpet needs to be replaced:
- Localised damage — one room, one section, one seam
- Still has pile depth and resilience in most of the room
- Damage is from a specific incident (burn, stain, pet scratch) rather than general age
A professional re-stretch can add years to a carpet that’s started to bubble and ripple. Learn more about carpet re-stretching.
Maintenance Tips to Extend Carpet Life
- Vacuum at least once a week — twice in high traffic areas
- Address spills immediately: blot, don't rub
- Use doormats at entries to reduce the amount of grit tracked onto the carpet
- Professional clean every 12–18 months
- Get bubbles and ripples re-stretched as soon as they appear — they cause uneven wear if ignored
When to Repair vs When to Replace
If the carpet is under 8 years old and the damage is localised, repair almost always makes financial sense. If the carpet is 12+ years old and showing general wear, replacement is worth considering — especially if you can do it as part of a renovation or when re-leasing a property.
